Jun 17 - Former Commissioner's Son Visits RGP

tim gowing Last week Mr Tim Gowing, son of the late Commissioner of Police Dudley S. Gowing, paid a courtesy call on the Royal Gibraltar Police. Mr Gowing was visiting Gibraltar together with members of The Friends of Gibraltar Group and took the opportunity to meet the senior command of the Royal Gibraltar Police at New Mole House.

Mr Gowing’s father was Assistant Chief of Police, to the then Chief of Police William Sutherland Gulloch, between 1933 and 1937.

He then took over as the first Commissioner of Police from 1937 to 1953. Tim Gowing left Gibraltar at the age of 11 to go to school in the UK, but returned for holidays until his father retired in 1953. He has fond memories of Gibraltar as a young man in the 50’s, particularly highlighting how trouble free it was to cross into Spain in comparison to today.

Mr Gowing was astonished as to the extent of development that has and is taking place in Gibraltar, and complimented the Royal Gibraltar Police for maintaining a high visibility role on the beat which he felt was very reassuring.
