Dec 04 - RGP Launch Christmas Anti-Drink Driving Campaign

As part of Operation Roadwatch, the Royal Gibraltar Police has launched its annual Christmas Anti Drink Drive Campaign.

The message this year is “Let's ALL get HOME for Christmas”.  The campaign centres around the fact that it is not just the intoxicated driver that risks not getting home for Christmas as a direct result of being arrested or involved in a serious collision whilst driving, but other road users, who may unwittingly be caught up, killed or injured in the collision.  In addition, even Emergency/Essential Services personnel working to rescue and administer medical assistance have friends and relatives waiting for them to get home for Christmas.

Awareness campaigns such as this have proved to be very effective in the past, says the RGP, and instances of drink driving have gone down from previous years as awareness on the dangers becomes much more widespread amongst local drivers.

Unfortunately, though, the RGP still detects an average of four intoxicated drivers per month and this campaign is just part of the organisation’s efforts to try and reduce these numbers even further.

On a positive note, only three road traffic collisions where alcohol was the contributory factor have occurred in the last twelve months, and in all three cases, the collisions were not of a serious nature.
