Jan 08 - RGP Investigating Scam Email Received By Local Business

The Royal Gibraltar Police are investigating a report from a local business regarding the receipt of a scam email containing malware. The email is blank and has no content but has a file attachment. This file purports to be a “PDF” file. Files of this type are commonly associated with text documents.

The attachment is not a ‘PDF’ file and it is believed to have been marked as such in order to deceive the recipient. The file, if opened, will automatically trawl the recipient’s computer for information on online banking systems. It is believed that the malware then transmits the information for use in creating a fraudulent bank transfer.

Whether the malware targets a specific online banking system or any corporate and personal bank account is as yet unclear.

The Royal Gibraltar Police would like to advise the public that if any such emails have been received and opened then they should contact the RGP’s Serious Crime Unit. Should such an email be received from an unknown sender then the email should be deleted. The suspect email could contain the words “ops” and “batch” in the sender’s email address.

Should further advice be sought, the public is urged to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 20072500 or via email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
