Mar 10 - Police Warn Syrian Man for Jumping Overboard and Swimming to Gibraltar

news An extensive search and rescue operation carried out early on Saturday morning by the Gibraltar Emergency services discovered a Syrian man, suffering from shock, hyperthermia and scraped hands after him and another Syrian national jumped from a bulk carrier they were working on. The ship, the MV Rising Falcon had been anchored in BGTW until 3am on Saturday when it left the area. The men had intended to swim to shore.

The man was found clinging on to a Ring Bouy from a ship that left the Algeciras Port on Friday evening. Following his arrest, the RGP discovered that the men had intended to swim to shore. The operation to find the second man continued throughout Saturday morning. It was later called off, with the Port Authority and RGP set to make extra marine patrols in the area.

The rescued man received medical assistance at St. Bernard’s Hospital and was given a police caution for his illegal entry into Gibraltar. He then joined another ship owned by the same company as the MV Rising Falcon.
