Letter Writing Workshop At BOOKgem
A ‘Letter Writing’ Workshop will take place on Tuesday 1st September from 4pm-6pm at BOOKgem bookshop in Ince’s Hall.
Led by Danica Field, Assistant Manager at BOOKgem, the session will explore the art of letter writing on World Letter Writing Day.
YGTV spoke to Danica ahead of the event:
YGTV: What activities will take place during the workshop?
Danica Field: We’ll talk a little about the art of letter writing and why it still matters, then everyone will have the chance to actually sit down and write a letter themselves. We’ll look at things like what makes a letter feel personal, how it differs from a text or email, and hopefully make the whole thing feel relaxed rather than intimidating. All the materials are provided, along with a drink.
YGTV: Is letter writing a forgotten skill in the age of instant messaging and email?
Danica Field: I think it’s definitely becoming one. We communicate more than ever, but perhaps we say less. So much of our communication now is quick: a message, an emoji, a voice note. Sitting down to write someone a letter makes you slow down and really think about what you want to say. I don’t think the desire for meaningful connection has disappeared, we’ve just got out of the habit of expressing it that way.
YGTV: Why are letters still important?
Danica Field: Because they’re tangible. A text disappears into hundreds of other messages, but a letter can be kept for years. There’s something incredibly personal about knowing somebody took the time to sit down, choose their words and physically write something just for you. I still have letters that were written to me years ago.
YGTV: What inspired you to host this workshop?
Danica Field: I actually came across some old letters while I was cleaning recently, and it reminded me how special it was to receive them. It made me think about how rarely we do that now. I wanted to create an evening where people could slow down for a couple of hours, put their phones aside and rediscover that feeling.
YGTV: Who will this workshop appeal to?
Danica Field: Honestly, anyone. You don’t have to be a writer or particularly creative. It could be someone who loves stationery and journalling, someone who misses writing letters, or someone who simply wants to do something a little different. It’s really about connection and taking some intentional time out.
