Nov 02 – Maureen Lipman Returns For This Year’s Literary Festival

Famous television and film actress, comedienne and celebrity Maureen Lipman, will be returning to the Rock for the forthcoming third edition of the Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival.

Maureen, with a long, successful career in broadcasting and show business behind her, is a well- known face in Gibraltar since she starred in the ITV/LWT sitcom ‘Agony’ screened on GBC in the 1980s.

Since then she has appeared in a wide range of well-established British TV series, firm family favourites such as ‘Casualty’(2007), ‘Dr Who’ (2006), and ‘Coronation Street’ (2002), and in more edgy roles in memorable vintage shows such as ‘Thriller’ (1973), ‘Smiley’s People’ (1982) and ‘The Sweeney’(1976).

An all-rounder, she also has experience of the stage with no less than 22 West End shows to her credit. In 2006 she appeared alongside Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, in an adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ‘Oklahoma!’ at the National Theatre.

Maureen notably starred in Roman Polanski’s ‘The Pianist’ (2002), a powerful Oscar winning WWII drama set in the Warsaw ghetto. She was also cast in the celebrated British kitchen sink drama ‘Up the Junction’ (1968).

She is currently filming ‘Plebs’, ITV2’s cult Ancient Rome sitcom, presenting ‘Disappearing Britain’ a More 4 series about the British outdoors, and co-starring with Robert Lindsay in a new comedy called ‘Bull’ set in an antiques shop.

Maureen has written articles for the Good Housekeeping magazine and a regular column in The Guardian. A politically outspoken commentator she contributes to the centre-right publication Standpoint.

At the Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival, she will be talking about her life and reading a few of her original monologues (Sunday November 15, 6pm, Sunborn).

Minister for Tourism Samantha Sacramento said she was delighted that Maureen Lipman would be returning to the Literary Festival this year.

She said: “Maureen is much loved by British audiences both for the style and diverse range of performances that she has accomplished throughout a distinguished professional acting career. She has graced the stage and also our television and film screens. Undoubtedly, Maureen is also a household name in Gibraltar, and we look forward to her brilliant and witty monologues.”
