Dec 23 - Ullger Exhibition Extended At Space 92 After Visitor Numbers Rise

The exhibition ‘RAW’ by local artist Karl J Ullger, currently on show at Space 92, has been extended until the end of January.

The organisers say they have taken this step  - together with the artist – due to the exhibition’s “phenomenal success”. Now, instead of closing in December, the exhibition will now continue to welcome visitors until 29 January 2016 giving the audience a whole extra month to contemplate the artwork of this amazing painter.

Since opening in October 2015 the exhibition, located at 92 Irish Town, has welcomed a crowd of people and the popularity of the exhibition doesn’t appear to be waning.

‘RAW’ has also seen a growing catalogue with two more new pieces: ‘Woven’ and ‘Lynch’s Lane Rooftops’ that are available for purchase by lovers of fine art. Space 92 would also like to remind the public that Karl Ullger has donated half of the proceeds from the sale of his artwork ‘Ocean Views’ to the mental health facility. The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Minister for Health John Cortes confirmed a that the £2000 will directly fund additional furnishings and equipment for the comfort and well-being of patients, as per Karl's request.

On May 22nd this year, Karl got accepted into the 247th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, one of the oldest art competition in the world, with his artwork done on metal titled, 'Bayview Clock Tower' which was included in this year’s summer exhibition. Following the footsteps of Gustavo Bacarias, it is believed that Karl is only the second Gibraltarian to enter in this exhibition in the last 100 years.

The organisers provide this vivid description of Ullger’s style: “'RAW' is a natural and fortuitous progression from the artist’s last 2014 pyrography; wood burning series. His work is all about metal, resin, varnishes, gold leaves; in essence accentuates the title itself. The canvas used by Karl James Ullger is a seemingly ordinary piece or every day use material which then transforms itself for potential art work. The artwork itself is not the stereotypical tourist-esque chocolate box view. They are ambiguous and inconspicuous captions from landscapes local or from my travels. At times they relate to the places where the materials or canvas where found.

“Some of the pieces on show are also aesthetical conceptualisations of passing ideas in forms of sculptures or paintings. Some may even be social statements, like the obtrusive ‘Scarred’ or the imposing monumental piece of ‘Unmade Bed’.”

The exhibition RAW is available for the public from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, at 92 Irish Town. For further information, please contact at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
