Apr 01 – The India-Gibraltar Connection: Paintings By Staunton-Browne Now On Sale

Paintings and sketches by David Staunton-Browne are going on sale at the Arts & Crafts Centre in Casemates today.

They will feature landscapes and features in Gibraltar, with a few pieces of satirical work that took David’s fancy.

When asked what it is that inspired him to paint, David said: “It’s the architecture that really inspires me. Having grown up in India, there are a lot of places in Gibraltar that remind me of my childhood in Madras, (now Chennai).

“Whether it’s the small shops in the Upper Town, or the lay out of homes, the building shapes, the broken windows or the old blinds, it just inspires me.

“I hope that what I do with these paintings is my impression of them, and in that sense I hope to convey my relationship with India and my take on Gibraltar and what I see.”

While the paintings are currently on sale, David is hoping for some constructive criticism on his work, as he said he is just doing this as a hobby since he retired.

He started painting again after he moved to Gibraltar more than four years ago, saying he picked up a paintbrush for the first time in forty years, having had to give up his hobby while work and family life took priority.

David, 71, lived in Chennai, India, until he was nine years old, before moving to Karachi in Pakistan, and finally to Portsmouth when he was 10.

He moved to Gibraltar to live closer to his daughter, artist and writer Rebecca Faller and her children, and has made Gibraltar his home ever since.

When asked which Gibraltarian artists inspire his work, as the architecture and landscape is something that features heavily within many of their works, he said he takes his inspiration from the artist James Foot, whom he got to know and who inspired him to start painting again.

This is his first exhibition and works will be on sale throughout the month of April. Prices for paintings range from £75 to £175.
