Oct 07 - Wallis, Pattni And Christian Confirmed For Literary Festival
Three more names have been added to the list of participating speakers at the 2016 Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival.
Storyteller and school teacher, Kathy Wallis, will be exploring how traditional storytelling from a variety of cultures can be used in oral history projects, as part of the curriculum for all ages.
She is an accomplished singer and storyteller in the Bardic tradition. Kathy has won numerous international trophies having performed in storytelling festivals in UK and abroad.
Kathy is also the National President of NASUWT, the UK Teachers’ Union. Her talk will be sponsored by the NASUWT/Gibraltar Teachers Association.
Dr Ramesh Pattni, DPhil (Oxford) has been a teacher and practitioner of Vedanta, one of the main schools of Indian philosophy for over two decades.
An expert in Yoga practices, spirituality and psychology, he will be examining the developments in Yoga philosophy and practice from ancient times, and how these impact on mental well-being.
He also teaches at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies and gives public lectures on many aspects of Hinduism, religion and science.
Among his many positions, Dr Pattni was the founder Co-Chair of the Hindu Christian Forum. He has been invited to Gibraltar by courtesy of the local Hindu community.
As part of the annual faith theme adopted by the Festival organisers, Dr Pattni will be giving a free workshop on the principles and practice of meditation at the Gibraltar Hindu Temple, on Sunday 23rd October 2016 from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.
The Kusuma Trust lecture will be delivered by Brian Christian co-author with Tom Griffith of the book ‘Algorithms to Live By.’
Brian will explore how the simple, precise algorithms used by computers can also untangle very human questions, helping to delve into human psychology, and assisting in the decision-making required to solve common problems.
He will explain how to have better hunches and when to leave things to chance, how to deal with overwhelming choices and how best to connect with others.
From finding a spouse to finding a parking spot, from organizing one’s inbox to understanding the workings of human memory, ‘Algorithms To Live By’ is full of practical advice about how to use time, space, and effort more efficiently.
Brian Christian is also the bestselling author of The Most Human Human, which was named a Wall Street Journal bestseller of 2011.
Minister for Tourism Samantha Sacramento welcomed the latest additions.
“We have achieved a diverse and well balanced programme in this year’s edition of the Literary Festival. There is something for everyone and we are convinced that the public will thoroughly enjoy the wonderful talks that have been arranged.
“There will be strong international speakers and a contingent of local artists who will no doubt provide the local flavour that the Gibraltarian public are looking forward to.”
