Oct 14 - Scottish Art Expert To Feature In Next Week’s Literary Festival

The Gibraltar Tourist Board has announced the speaker that completes the programme for the 2016 Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival: Professor of History of Scottish Art, Murdo Macdonald.

Professor Macdonald, from the University of Dundee, has given public lectures and seminars throughout the world and is the author of ‘Scottish Art’ in Thames and Hudson’s World of Art series. He also has a longstanding interest in art in an international academic context.

His presentation at the Festival is entitled ‘Images of Celtic Internationalism: A view of Scottish Art’ and will revisit and expand a talk he delivered at the British Museum earlier this year as part of its Celts: Art and Identity exhibition. A fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Professor Macdonald will explore the wider international dimensions of the Scottish art and literature of the Celtic revival, in terms of European links and with respect to cultural revival in India and Japan. His talk is illustrated with the works of Scottish artists and other key European painters such as JMW Turner and Ingres. It will encompass the mid-18th century to the present.

Minister for Tourism, Samantha Sacramento, welcomed the latest and final addition to the Literary Festival programme.

The Minister said: “We are delighted that Professor Macdonald accepted our invitation to take part in this year’s edition of the Literary Festival. Our festival is a truly international celebration of the arts and bringing in a top University professor from Scotland extends its scope.

“I think that this year the programme is an excellent one with something for everyone, with a multitude of interesting subjects to choose from. Audiences will be well served with a wonderful collection of speakers.”
