Oct 19 - NASUWT Sponsors Literary Festival

The NASUWT, the teachers’ union representing all teaching staff in Gibraltar’s schools, is sponsoring the Gibraltar International Literary Festival.

The festival, which runs from 20-23 October, will also be addressed by Kathy Wallis, NASUWT National President.

Ms Wallis, from Cornwall, is an accomplished and award-winning storyteller in the Bardic tradition and will be drawing on her experiences as a teacher to explain how traditional storytelling can be used in the school curriculum and to share oral history.

Her talk, ‘The Art of Storytelling’ will be held on Sunday 23 October at 10am in the John Mackintosh Hall.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: “The NASUWT is proud to be involved in an event celebrating the power of the written and spoken word, which is a fundamental building block in the social and emotional development of our children and young people.

“We hope the Festival will capture the imagination of children, young people and their parents and enhance the outstanding work teachers do every day to inspire and empower their pupils.”

Kathy Wallis said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to join such an illustrious roster of speakers at the Festival and to be able to shine a spotlight on the importance of storytelling to developing our sense of self and the world around us.

“I am looking forward to sharing some of the wonderful traditional stories which form part of the rich culture of so many communities around the world and to hearing new stories from the audience.”
