Nov 16 - Rebecca Faller Wins Top Prize In This Year’s Poetry Competition

Rebecca Faller has taken the top prize in the annual Poetry Competition. The competition, which this year attracted 360 entries, is organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, and in conjunction with the Gibraltar Chronicle.

The Minister for Culture, Steven Linares, presented the awards yesterday afternoon at the John Mackintosh Hall.

Commenting on the competition Minister Linares said:

“The Poetry Competition gives another dimension to Culture. This element adds, alongside music, theatre, art and other established aspects, the literary aspect of the Autumn Cultural Programme. I am extremely pleased with the high number of entries, but more importantly, with the quality of these.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in this venture, including the Gibraltar Chronicle, the Department of Education and especially the adjudicators Mr Charles Durante and Ms Conchita Triay. I would particularly like to thank the many children who put pen to paper and in doing so, allowed us to enjoy their excellent work.”

Mr Linares also announced that there are plans to publish an anthology of past entries which can be distributed to local schools.

Mr Durante, in a short address, said that Gibraltar was experiencing a “poetic renaissance” and highlighted the “sterling quality” of many of the entries.

He concluded with a hint of future successes to come: “We have gained international status with the brush; we now have to achieve a similar status with the pen, or should I say, the laptop!”
