Jan 17 - The Storyteller Gears Up For International Book Giving Day

The Storyteller is a newly established online children's bookshop in Gibraltar.

The local bookshop is now gearing up to participate in International Book Giving Day, which would be a first for the Rock.

This event, which was started in USA in 2012 by a book blogger, will be celebrated on 14th February. It is a perfect opportunity to get books into the hands of as many children as possible, and has grown into an international event with countries such as UK, France, Germany, Australia, and many others participating.

The Storyteller wants to get involved in this wonderful initiative and help gift books to local children but, in order to make this a success, they desperately need help from the community.

HOW TO HELP?

1) Donation – The Storyteller would use every single penny from donations (big or small) to purchase brand new children's books from their suppliers in UK. They would place an order towards the end of January to ensure that they arrive in time to be distributed. All the books would have sticker labels with the name of the company/individual who has donated, unless they wish to remain anonymous. Then they offer two options;

a) Books can be collected and distributed by the individual/company, providing it is handed out to local children. Some examples that have been done in other countries include a book treasure hunt that could be organised with photo clues posted on social media, some books dropped off in playgrounds within clear plastic folders (to avoid getting ruined) that are clearly labelled with 'Please Take Me Home', or they can even be handed out in health clinics, nurseries, schools, etc.

b) The Storyteller can distribute them on behalf of the individual/company.

2) Providing 'as new' children's books - These would need to be in good condition as they will be gifted (no missing pages, etc). The Storyteller will then ensure that they are also clearly labelled, and distributed.

A spokesperson told YGTV: “We intend to provide books to places such as the Rainbow Ward (children's ward at the Hospital), Women's Refuge, Primary Care Dental Clinic, Health Visitors Baby Clinic... Just to name a few! And if it becomes really successful, as we hope it will be, then hopefully we can even include playgrounds, nurseries, and schools.”
