Jul 15 - 1.82 Million Viewers Tune in to Gibraltar: Britain in the Sun

newsGibraltar is slowly rising to the heights of becoming a household conversational topic in 1.32 million homes around the UK. The Channel 5 commissioned eight-part programme, Gibraltar: Britain in the Sun was last week counted as the 10th most watched programme on the channel.

The series has opened up the country to such famed local personalities as Gibraltar Chronicle photographer, Johnny Bugeja and Head of Ape management, Dr. Eric Shaw and is pulling in fairly mixed reviews. Online blogs have criticised the show for being ‘slow-moving’ with ‘unnecessarily drawn out story lines’.

Locals have insisted that the programme steers a particular focus on expatriates in Gibraltar, and does not accurately display life on the Rock, for Gibraltarians.

The series has also given viewers an insight into the day-to-day lives of the Royal Gibraltar Police, Customs officials and the GHA’s ambulance service. This week’s episode will follow National Day 2012, giving the UK a snippet of the series of events that lead up to the biggest day of the year for Gibraltarians.

Gibraltar has also featured fairly frequently within international print media in recent weeks. Last month’s incident between a Guardia Civil Vessel and a local jet ski operator was reported on by a multitude of media outlets including the Times and the Daily Mail. Gibraltar was even featured in a Times supplement today.
