Nov 06 - Garrison Library Pleased To Present Nina Danino's Solo Exhibition

Nina Danino’s solo exhibition “and the figtrees in the Alameda gardens” will be displayed at the Garrison Library from 13 November –4 December from Monday - Friday 10am -5pm.

The magnificent Gibraltar Garrison Library was established in 1793. Since then, the venue, with its fine collection of rare books and documents, has been a centre of international cultural life in Gibraltar.

The exhibition brings together three of Nina Danino’s early 16mm films which are related to Gibraltar as a place, its geography, history and in the imagination. First Memory (1980) Close to Home (1985) Stabat Mater (1990) and includes her recent video and text installation Terrace (2012) and book and audio piece Meteorologies (2013).

She uses image and sound to evoke emotional landscapes. She has worked with singers of extraordinary vocal range and is renowned for her soundtracks and the use of the voice in film.

These 16mm films originally shown in cinema screenings are here shown on monitors together with materials displayed in a large vitrine which is the centrepiece of the exhibition.

The artist's personal archive in the vitrine is presented here for the first time. It shows her working methods, the act of research and the genesis of each film - often born in libraries, including the Garrison. The vitrine comes together with the moving image in an installation which is in dialogue with the Upper Reading Room of the Garrison Library.
