Sep 18 - Gibraltar’s “Monkey Hill” Ranks As Filthy Tourist Spot According To Italian Newspaper…But Hey, What’s That Picture?
Gibraltar’s “Monkey Hill” features in a list of the world’s filthiest tourist spots compiled by the Italian daily newspaper, La Repubblica, and posted on its website.
Gibraltar joins New Delhi, the Glastonbury Festival and the London Underground network in a varied hall of shame of dirt, germs and pollution.
However, on closer inspection, there are two major errors contained on the Italian news site. Firstly, Gibraltar is said to be in Spain - the caption reads: “Gibilterra (Spagna).”
Secondly, the picture has clearly not been taken on the Rock and shows monkeys with tails. As every local knows, of course, Gibraltar’s famous residents – the Barbary Macaques – are, in fact, tailless.
As they say in Italy: “Peccato!” (Bummer!)
