A statement from GCS follows below:
Gibraltar Cultural Services, on behalf of the Ministry for Culture, is delighted with the overwhelming success of its prelude to the Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival, An Audience with David Walliams, held last week at the Europa Sports Arena.
International best-selling author, comedian, and actor David Walliams OBE delivered a spectacular double-bill that captivated audiences of all ages and cemented Gibraltar’s reputation as a growing hub for world-class cultural events.
Over 1600 schoolchildren from Years 4, 5, and 6 across Gibraltar had the opportunity to see the author live. David Walliams spoke about the inspiration for his books and characters, and invited children on stage to win books for their schools. David also kindly gifted each school a selection of his books. The atmosphere was electric, with Walliams commenting that he thought they were his loudest audience yet. It was a truly unforgettable experience for young readers and aspiring writers.
Later that evening, more than 1400 adults filled the arena once again for an uproarious comedy evening where Walliams shared humorous and heartwarming stories from his life and career, as well as tapping into local anecdotes and humour, referring to Gibraltar as the true ‘Little Britain’.
During his visit David Walliams was treated to a tour of the Rock, including encounters with the famous Barbary macaques, a walk through the iconic St. Michael’s Cave, and a look inside Gibraltar’s historic WWII tunnels. A long-time James Bond fan, Walliams was eager to know more about the Rock, and confirmed its history added an extra layer of excitement for him during his stay.
Minister for Tourism and Culture, the Hon Christian Santos GMD MP, commented: "We are thrilled with the success of David Walliams' visit and the joy it brought to both children and adults. This special event sets the stage beautifully for the upcoming 2025 Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival which promises to be another highlight in our cultural calendar.”
