Jan 22 - The Cervantes Institute Celebrates Its Fourth Anniversary On The Rock – Winter Programme Released

This year marks four years since the Instituto Cervantes opened its cultural centre in Gibraltar. Its winter programme of cultural events, which has just been released, will include lectures, films, tastings, book presentations and other activities.

The Carnival will come to Gibraltar on Wednesday 28th January with a performance from the San Roque quintet "Los 5 del Platero" which has won several awards and was a finalist in a competition in Cádiz. Chirigotas will dominate the performance by the extraordinary voices of this group. Admission is free on Wednesday 28th at 7pm.

Moving into February, on the 4th, Professor Miguel Checa, Profesor Titular de Derecho Internacional Privado de la Universidad de Cádiz, will give a lecture entitled "The entry into force of European Regulations on Inheritance: how do the changes affect the rules of succession in Spain?” This talk is aimed at legal practitioners and all stakeholders and will analyse the consequences of this regulation in Spain and the rest of continental Europe.

On the 9th February, the Instituto Cervantes resumes the lecture series "Sefarad-Reecuentro Gibraltar with a lecture by José Luis Gómez Barceló, from the General Archive in Ceuta, who will discuss "Six hundred years of Sephardic presence in Ceuta, in connection with the communities of Tetouan and Gibraltar ".

In addition, UNED professor José Juan Yborra will present his book "Mar de Azogue" on the 11th February. This is his first book of poetry and it features a preface by the winner of 2012 Cervantes Prize for Literature, José Manuel Caballero Bonald.

On the 16th February, Manuel Navarro, director and screenwriter of the TVE programme “Arqueomanía”, will host a conference entitled "In the end, the dead spoke on TV: the story of how archeology earned a place in the program schedule".

On Wednesday 4th March, the Instituto Cervantes wants to renew interest in the hero of Spanish American independence, Bernardo de Gálvez, whose portrait hangs in US Congress. A lecture on this historical figure will be delivered by the historian Manuel Olmedo and Miguel Angel Galvez, President of the Bernardo de Gálvez Cultural Association.

Finally, the Cervantes Institute wants to highlight the work of Luis Buñuel in its regular film club evenings. There will be screenings of some works of Spanish contemporary cinema like “Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados” directed by David Trueba (2nd February) and "La Herida" by Fernando Franco (2nd March).

The ever-popular meetings of the Club de Zarzuela will continue in 2015 with Thomas Breton’s "La Dolores", on January 26th, and "Mis Dos Mujeres" by Barbieri and Olona on Monday 23rd February.

March will close with a cocktail tasting session presented by the Spanish distillery Rives, and kindly sponsored by Lewis Stagnetto Ltd.
