Sep 16 - Cross Frontier Group Spearheads The Establishment Of A European Grouping Of Territorial Cooperation

The Cross Frontier Group (CFG) will be holding separate meetings with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar and the Mayor of La Linea over the coming weeks.

The Cross-Frontier Group, composed of workers’ unions and business associations from both Gibraltar and the Campo area, says it is extremely satisfied with the response given to its initiative in promoting a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) across bordering towns.

It has also greeted with great encouragement the unequivocal statement of support to this initiative by Mr Picardo and a meeting has been arranged for this Friday at his request. The aim of this meeting is to compare notes and to identify common objectives of cooperation.

The CFG will also be meeting on Friday 25th September with the Mayor of La Linea to discuss these same issues.

The CFG has been working on the possibilities of establishing an EGTC for some time and has sought and received a detailed report from Professor Alejandro del Valle from the Universidad de Cadiz. The CFG has also participated in a debate on the subject arranged as part of a San Roque summer course in July this year.

EGTCs are legal entities set up to facilitate cross-border cooperation in the European Union. They allow regional and local authorities and other public undertakings from different member countries to set up groupings with a legal personality to deliver joint services in economy, social and territorial areas. The CFG says it values all of these highly.

“The benefits of developing an EGTC locally, merits the dedication and compromise of all those who value the improvement of both economical and social aspects of our citizens in this corner of southern Europe,” ended a statement.
