Sep 23 - GSD Condemns Bizzy Bee “Wastage”

Earlier on this year the GSD drew attention to complaints from the construction sector at the way the Government had allocated a contract - worth in excess of £1.5 million - to a start up company called Bizzy Bee Limited which, the party said at the time, is owned by “well-known GSLP supporters”. The contract was, amongst other things, to renew pavements at Varyl Begg Estate.

The Opposition says that Bizzy Bee Limited is a company which on April 16, 2013 applied for a Trade Licence in order to exclusively “advise the Gibraltar Government on construction, road works and machine hire”.

At the time the Oppositon said it was “extraordinary” for a company to apply for a Trade Licence exclusively to “advise the Government” and nothing else. In other words, argues the GSD, the company in question would be in breach of its Trade Licence if it did non-Government work.

The GSD says it has this week received complaints from residents at Varyl Begg, which it has been able to verify, that shortly after Bizzy Bee Limited and its contractors completed the works, a new company has started to dig up part of the brand new pavements to install new lampposts.

A statement from the party concluded: “This kind of wastage and lack of planning is appalling and illustrates that this Government just thinks money grows on trees.”
