Sep 30 - WHO Officially Recognises Ship Sanitation Certificates Can Now Be Issued At Gibraltar Port

The Government has announced that the Port of Gibraltar has now been added to the list of ports officially recognised globally to issue Ship Sanitation Certificates.

The World Health Organisation’s International Health Regulations (2004) were a major advance in the world-wide strategy to tackle infectious diseases and the ability to monitor ships and issue Ship Sanitation Certificates is an essential component of this strategy. Gibraltar Port can join the ranks of international ports equipped, capable and recognised for carrying out this function. Ships will be inspected and the Certificates issued by the Environmental Agency.

Dr John Cortes, the Minister for Health, commented: ‘I am delighted that the tireless efforts of the Gibraltar Health Authority, Gibraltar Port, Environmental Agency, Borders and Coastguard Agency and other departments have been rewarded at last. This is another important development in the Government of Gibraltar’s attempts to ensure that the Port of Gibraltar can offer the full range of maritime services.”

Paul Balban, Minister for the Port said: ‘Being recognised by the WHO for this purpose allows the Port of Gibraltar to offer yet another important ancillary service which can only serve to further promote and encourage the use of Gibraltar by the international maritime world.’
