Oct 05 - Government Statement On The Death Of Denis Healey

The Government says that the death of Denis Healey is a sad loss that has been felt throughout the political establishment in the United Kingdom and also in Gibraltar.

He was a minister in the Labour Party in Government both as Defence Secretary and as Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was a man who was hugely influential in shaping events during his time in office.

Joe Bossano, Minister for Economic Development, knew Mr Healey. He said: "Denis was a man who I knew from my times in the UK in the Trade Union and Labour movements. He will be sadly missed by all on the left of politics and his many friends beyond that as he was well liked even by his staunchest opponents."

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, said: "Denis Healey fought with distinction in the Second World War and served the Labour Party in Government in various ministerial roles. He will be most remembered for the difficult period in which he was Chancellor in the nineteen seventies. The British Labour movement says farewell to one of its historic figures and we extend our condolences to his family and to his party."
