Oct 16 - Opposition Continue To Mislead The Public – Number Six
The latest statement by the Opposition on the content of the advertisements placed by the GSLP/Liberals is nothing more than a “cheap and transparent attempt to mislead the public” according to a statement from Number Six.
The Government says that the GSD “have chosen to play a numbers game with serious politics.”
The reality, argues Number Six, is that they cannot get away from the fact that this Government has spent a similar amount in ten projects to what they spent in only three.
A statement continued: “It is missing the point to say that the cost of the new air terminal (which they mistakenly describe as an airport) was £ 65 million because the payment was made in euros. The point is that it cost about three times as much as the sum that had been originally announced. It is also not correct to seek to deduct from this the value of the plot of land where the old air terminal was located without including also the relocation, infrastructure and other costs related to the entities that were sited where they chose to build the new terminal!
“Aviation has not grown thanks to GSD foresight. Aviation has grown because of the marketing policy of the Government that has attracted new routes to Birmingham, Bristol, Tangier and Casablanca in our time in office. The decision taken by the GSD to construct a new terminal and move it next to the frontier fence had nothing to do with foresight or economics. It was plain and simple the result of a political agreement that they signed with Spain which bound them to do it. In fact, it is precisely the lack of foresight that the GSD have shown that has seen Spain pocket the gains that she made from this deal, particularly the financial, and then dishonour most of what they signed up to. This despite assurances that there could be no cherry-picking!
“The figures show that the Government has grown the economy, grown public revenue, grown employment, grown deposits in the savings bank and the profits that it generates. This is undeniable and no amount of moaning by the Opposition will mask this reality.”
