Oct 29 - GSLP-Libs Accuse GSD Of Having Delayed Implementation Of Commission Report

The GSLP-Libs have said that it is clear that the GSD “are on a different wavelength to the rest of Gibraltar or that they have existed in a world of their own over the last four years”. This, says the party, is reflected in their latest comments on political and democratic reform.

A statement continued: “They do not seem to be aware that the Commission on Democratic and Political Reform was established, took soundings and reported to Parliament within the envisaged timescale. However, it was the GSD in Parliament who suggested that the recommendations made by the Commission should be the subject of further deliberation by a Select Committee of Parliament. The establishment of such a Select Committee was not the policy of the GSLP/Liberals. The commitment that we gave was to implement the recommendations of the Commission only. However, the GSLP/Liberal Government decided to allow for further consultation on the subject by agreeing to the request of the GSD for a Select Committee of Parliament to take the matter further.

“It is a bit rich for the GSD to call for a Select Committee to be established and then complain that the addition of this new and unforeseen procedural layer has delayed matters. If the Committee had not been set up then the relevant recommendations of the Commission would have been considered and implemented by now.

“The newly found enthusiasm of the GSD for democratic and political reform sounds rather hollow for a party that was in Government from 1996 to 2011 and did precious little to take this cause forward. It is the GSLP/Liberals who have transformed the system in only four years.”
