Nov 18 - Alliance Pledges To Tackle Traffic And Parking Problems

The GSLP-Liberal Alliance is committed to making “real inroads” to tackle the traffic and parking problems in Gibraltar, if elected into Government.

GSLP candidate Paul Balban, who held the ministerial portfolio for transport, said that the Alliance wasted no time in putting together the Sustainable Traffic, Transport & Parking Plan (STTPP), and what they have achieved during their first term in office has been “remarkable.”

At a press conference held in the GSLP-Liberal Alliance office in Engineer’s Lane yesterday, Mr Balban said: “Gibraltar is too small, and there are too many cars and too many cars coming in from Spain, from both visitors and those coming in to work. This is an issue that needs to be addressed.”

Dr Joseph Garcia, Leader of the Liberal Party, outlined the achievements by Mr Balban, including the helmet campaign, the motorcycle footrests campaign, and the Compulsory Basic Training course for new moped riders.

Some of the other projects which have already come to light have been those such as the new rental bicycle scheme, new upper town busses, night bus routes, the bus tracker app, speed cameras in some of the most dangerous roads in Gibraltar, new crossings for pedestrians to ensure their safety, and their continued work with the Gibraltar Taxi Association.

Some of the changes the Alliance is looking to make to traffic and transport in the upcoming final plan, which is set to be implemented over the next five to ten years, are as follows:

Parking Enforcement

Control of illegal and indiscriminate parking will be tackled head-on as will the issue of derelict vehicles on our highways taking up valuable parking spaces.

Parking Bays For The Disabled

The GSLP-Liberal Alliance have noted there is a need to extend and regulate provision of parking bays for disabled persons in all areas. The final plan which will be presented shortly will set out clear ways forward to make the scheme fair to all users while addressing the needs of the population.

Residential Parking

A GSLP-Liberal Government will progress with a residential parking scheme for the whole of Gibraltar. This will be rolled out slowly yet within a clearly defined period of time. Additional parking facilities will also be developed, in particular, in the south district.

Pay Car Parks

To help ease the parking situation in the town area, the new E-ID card will allow residents privilege access to pay car parks operated by the Government either for free or at a discounted price.

Airport Tunnel

The Alliance hopes that traffic congestion during peak flight times will be eased once the airport tunnel is open for use.
