Nov 18 - GSLP-Libs To Further Strengthen Gibraltar’s International Profile

If re-elected, the GSLP-Libs will explore a new strategy to defend and advance Gibraltar’s position at the United Nations and continue lobbying campaigns in Washington, London and Brussels. The party has also repeated its commitment to the Trilateral Forum and stressed that sovereignty “is not up for discussion or compromise.”

GSLP Leader Fabian Picardo told the press this afternoon that his party remained convinced that attending meetings of the UN Committee of 24 and the Fourth Committee was essential to make Gibraltar’s position clear, to update the international community on political developments and to challenge Spain’s views. He also said that Gibraltar’s relationship with the UK was now better than ever and there was no question of London returning to any form of bilateral negotiations.

Joe Bossano, who is contesting his 12th election, said that Gibraltar “should never give up” on the international political stage. Mr Bossano said that although Gibraltar’s at the UN had in effect won “the legal battle and the moral battle” it had not yet managed to overcome the “horse-trading” between politicians and their regional or historical alliances.

Dr Joseph Garcia, the Liberal Party Leader, said that he had established good working relationships with MEPs in Brussels who were regularly briefed about Gibraltar affairs. He also highlighted the positive commercial and political links being forged in the United States which have involved the creation of AmCham Gibraltar and a Congress resolution supporting Gibraltar’s right to self-determination.
