Jan 18 – Unite To Host Spanish Civil War Symposium Next Month

The Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939 had an important impact not just in the Campo de Gibraltar, but also in Gibraltar itself as a society. The Military uprising started very close to Gibraltar as Francoist forces disembarked in Algeciras. Its immediate impact was felt very closely due to its effect in La Linea. Many Spaniards in the area especially trade Unionist Republicans and Free Masons found refuge in Gibraltar from the beginning of the conflict.

In order to recall those far-reaching historical events, Unite the Union is organising a symposium on the effects the Spanish Civil War had in the local community, especially that regarding trade unions and the wider labour movements of the day.

The symposium will be held in Gibraltar on the 17th February. Unite the Union is inviting keynote speakers from abroad that are experts on the subject. This includes Gareth Stockey, Chris Grocott and Pepe Algarbani. We will also be showing an exclusive interview with the prominent historian Paul Preston on this particular aspect of the Spanish Civil War.

The Symposium will be held at the John Mackintosh Hall from 18:00 hrs – 21:00 hrs. on Wednesday 17th February.

More details of the event will be published closer to the date of the symposium.

Unite the Union would be most grateful for any member of the general public who is interested in attending the symposium to get in touch with the organisers through Unite the Union Tel 200 74185
