Feb 02 - GSD “Welcomes Victoria Cat 3 Upgrade”

The GSD says that, on 18 January 2016, the Minister for Sport, Steven Linares, told the Gibraltar Chronicle that works at the Bayside Sports Complex would be completed by February of this year, after which the Victoria Stadium would have “improved modern facilities ... for the use of several sports”.

Referring to the Category of the Victoria Stadium for UEFA purposes, the Minister said that “the Victoria Stadium would not become a UEFA Cat 3 for football only – it will be a Municipal Stadium accommodating all sports”.

The GSD says it wishes to congratulate the Minister for deciding to upgrade the Victoria Stadium to a UEFA Cat 3 stadium, which is what the GSD has been advocating for over two years now. It will be recalled, says the party, that originally the Minister told Parliament that it was not possible to upgrade the Victoria Stadium to a UEFA Cat 3 for variety of reasons without disrupting other sports.

Shadow Minister for Sports Edwin Reyes said: “The significance of an upgrade to UEFA Cat 3 is that in the absence of a UEFA Cat 4 stadium, the UEFA rules make it crystal clear that national games can be played in a UEFA Cat 3 stadium and, therefore, we can finally bring football home. This will come as a welcome development for the many fans who have to travel to Faro for home games.”
