Feb 25 - Chief Minister: Remaining Part Of The EU Is A "No-Brainer"
The Chief Minister has said that the decision to remain a part of the EU is, for Gibraltar, a “no-brainer”.
In an article posted on the wakeupeurope.eu website, Mr Picardo also says that some stalwart supporters of Gibraltar’s cause in Westminster “will find themselves torn between a commitment to Brexit and their long-standing loyalty to Gibraltar.”
According to the Chief Minister, ‘Brexit’ constitutes a “much broader threat and challenge” than the failed joint sovereignty proposals hatched by the Blair and Aznar governments in 2002.
Mr Picardo also highlights the many social and economic benefits of EU membership which have made Gibraltar the place it is today:
“Our access to the single market and Britain has meant that our economy has not been dependent on British handouts for over 30 years. In that time we have evolved from a 70% Ministry of Defence based economy to fulfil Margaret Thatcher’s challenge to us to develop our tourism, financial services and commercial port services.”
He concludes:“We should stay together, British and European. Small as we are, Gibraltar will say that with one loud voice.”
