Mar 08 - Unite Supports Changes To MPs’ Pensions

Unite the Union's Pension’s Coordinator, Albert Hewitt (pictured) says he “notes with satisfaction” the changes made by the Government whereby pensions for newly elected Members of Parliament have moved away from the Final Salary Non-Contributory scheme to the Contributory scheme, as is the case with new entrants to the Public Service.

A statement from the union continued: “Government majority in Parliament has taken steps to ensure that equality prevails in respects to pensions, where a politician’s contribution to public life is not rewarded over and above that of ordinary public sector workers. Furthermore the steps taken also ensure that all future entrants, irrespective of the colour of their party, will be required to participate in these Contributory Pensions and thus reduce the cost to the public purse.”
