Mar 17 - EU Safeguards Gibraltar “Against Excesses Of Hostile Spanish Government”

Access to the European Single Market, the free movement of persons across the border and the existing framework of EU law which safeguards Gibraltar “against the excesses of a hostile Spanish Government” are the key reasons why Gibraltar and the UK should remain in the European Union.

This is according to a submission sent by the Government to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons which details the consequences for Gibraltar in the event of a ‘Brexit’ outcome in June’s referendum.

The Government has also said that there should be “clarity as to the rights the British Government will protect and defend for Gibraltar” should the UK vote to leave the EU and commence a process of prolonged negotiation.

The paper also refers to recent statements from Spain’s caretaker Foreign Minister to the effect that Spain would seek to make progress on her sovereignty claim following ‘Brexit’. The document warns that Spain could close the border and resurrect the failed joint sovereignty proposals.

“It is essential that the United Kingdom Government guard against attempts by Spain to take advantage of the present situation by advancing their claim to Gibraltar.”

The Government’s position on the vote is set out in the Deputy Chief Minister’s covering letter to Chairman of the Committee, Crispin Blunt.

In the letter, Dr Garcia says: “The position of the Parliament, Government, Opposition and all the political parties in Gibraltar is that remaining in the European Union is undoubtedly the outcome that will best protect Gibraltar’s interests.”
