Apr 07 - Gib Macaque App Launched Today

Children and adults alike can now learn more about the Barbary Macaques with the new Gib Macaque app that was launched today.

The app will provide users with ample information on the monkeys, their ecology and behaviour and how people should behave around them to better co-exist.

One of the innovative features included in the app is the integration of an Augmented Reality Macaque Quiz to be used with a printed 3D marker and will encourage users to learn about the macaques through play.

Dr John Cortes, the Minister for the Environment and Climate change, launched the app this morning.

He said: “We are trying to raise awareness about the macaques, and help make them recognised, not as a nuisance, but as an asset, scientifically, a tourist product, and I think we are succeeding.

“We are gradually succeeding in them being seen as a nuisance to something people enjoy, and so a lot of people have been involved in making this app for children.

"I think it's really exciting and quite fun."

Department of the Environment and Climate Change has worked in collaboration with GONHS, the Gibraltar Veterinary Clinic and Monkey Talk Gibraltar.

Members of the public of all ages are encouraged to download the app and learn more about these fascinating animals, which are not only an asset, but also an inherent part of Gibraltarian culture.

While demonstrating the app, Sarah Fromow, said the app will appeal to tourists and Gibraltarians alike, and the games will help children to learn through playing the game. After answering the correct answer in the quiz, a small information box will appear.

The Gib Macaque App is currently available on Android from the Google Play store and will shortly be available for iOS platforms from Apple’s App Store.

Further particulars may be obtained from the Department’s Thinking Green website (www.thinkinggreen.gov.gi) or the Thinking Green Gibraltar Facebook page.
