Apr 11 - Brexit Campaigners Propose To Give Gibraltar Own MP – Casemates Rally This Evening

A campaign calling on the UK Government to invite Gibraltar to have its own Member of Parliament in the event of Brexit will be launched this evening in Casemates.

A Grassroots Out (GO) delegation led by Andrew Rosindell MP and Executive Director of GO, Alex Deane is in Gibraltar to make the case for Gibraltarians to vote to leave the EU.

GO are urging the UK Government to invite Gibraltar to become an equal part of the UK so that they would be fully represented within the UK, including having their own MP in the House of Commons.

The statement on the campaign’s website says that such a move “would strengthen Gibraltar’s position against the Spanish Government who have historically arbitrarily closed the border between the British Overseas Territory and Spain. As Spain is its main trading partner, Gibraltar relies heavily on the border between the two and closing the border has hugely negative impacts on the economy of Gibraltar.”

GO are also calling on the UK Government to ensure that Gibraltar are fully involved and consulted on  trade negotiations that take place if the UK votes to leave the EU on June 23rd.

The GO delegation will be in Casemates Square as from 5pm.

Executive Director of GO, Alex Deane said:

“GO look forward to taking our positive message about a better life outside of the EU to the people of Gibraltar.

“We will be campaigning for the people of Gibraltar to have more of a say in how they are governed.

“Inviting Gibraltar to have an MP in the UK Parliament would give the territory even more of a say in how they are governed and protect them from Spanish aggression.”

Conservative MP, Andrew Rosindell said:

“If the UK remains in the EU we will be forced into remaining part of and supporting an EU superstate.

"This undermines the sovereignty of the UK and Gibraltar.  If there is no sovereign UK, there will eventually be no Overseas Territories, that would leave Gibraltar at the mercy of Spain via Brussels.

"The only way for Gibraltar to remain free, democratic and self-governing is if it leaves the EU and becomes even more closely linked to the UK and the wider British family.

“A vote to leave the EU and to have greater representation in the UK will put an end to the threat of Spain, making it clear that Gibraltar is British and will be defended against aggression in exactly the same way as if the Rock were a part of mainland UK.

"I will always fight for the people of British Gibraltar, that’s why our long term interests are best served outside of EU control!”
