May 18 – GSD Says Poor Cemetery Upkeep Is “Unacceptable”

The GSD has today called on the Government to examine what it calls the “continued poor upkeep” of the North Front Cemetery and ensure the site is in an appropriate condition. At present, says the party, it appears that the cemetery has been “all but abandoned with no effective maintenance program in place”.

GSD Shadow Minister for the Environment, Trevor Hammond, said: "We never visit the cemetery in happy circumstances and it is simply a matter of respect that we ensure that our cemetery be maintained in at least a reasonable condition for services to be held there and for grieving relatives to visit loved ones. We raised this issue during the General Election and this sad state of affairs continues. Damage has been left unrepaired, there is little maintenance of green areas and there are abandoned piles of rubble. As late as March of this year, the grave of a Victoria Cross recipient was surrounded by rubble. I ask that the Government looks at this as a matter of urgency and implements measures to improve the situation, the status quo is unacceptable."
