Jul 07 - Protest Held To Free Gibraltar Fisherman Held In Custody By Guardia Civil

An impromptu demonstration was held outside the Convent this afternoon to show solidarity with the three Gibraltarian fishermen who were arrested by Guardia Civil officers at sea yesterday and taken to Ceuta.

Traffic was blocked along the southern end of Main Street and down Convent Place as almost 100 demonstrators sat down in protest calling for answers.

The demonstration was organised by friends and family who wanted to see their fishing colleagues freed by Spanish authorities and calling for the Government to act.

Chants could be heard asking for the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo to come to address the protestors, with some chants calling for more action from the Royal Gibraltar Police Marine Section.

Mr Picardo, accompanied by Minister for Justice Gilbert Licudi, said he was very worried about the arrests and he is working with the authorities in question to resolve the issue.

Protestor Simy Herbert, known for defending Gibraltar’s interests, said: “We can’t carry on like this because one day there is going to be a fatal accident.

“We want these boys to be brought back to Gibraltar, he has done nothing wrong, he was just fishing.

“We are sick and tired of all this, we just want to live in peace.”

One fisherman is still being held in custody by Guardia Civil Officers in Ceuta.
