Jul 08 - ERG Welcomes GSD Budget Statements

The Equality Rights Group welcomes GSD budget statements following Opposition member Elliott Phillips' parliamentary Budget Speech.

 

A statement from the group read: "In particular, we are pleased to see Mr. Phillips advocating the introduction of a Pro Bono Unit to complement Gibraltar's Legal Aid & Assistance Scheme.

 

"This is an issue and a Campaign ERG announced and has been publicly working on and advocating for a number of years, and we welcome the GSD's active advocacy now on an issue which, when implemented, will make Justice possible in cases of merit where the only obstacle is cost.

 

"We also take note that Mr. Phillips is just as concerned as ERG on the matter of the four-year delay to the Manifesto-promised introduction of a comprehensive Disability Bill.

 

"We would like to feel and very much hope that Government will address the issue now without further delay. It is, indeed, a delay for which no explanation has been given and which, undoubtedly, is wholly unfair to the disabled community and their families."
