Jul 21 - Brexit Impact On Gibraltar Discussed By UK MPs
The effect of the EU Referendum result on Gibraltar was discussed by United Kingdom MPs in the Westminster Hall at the House of Commons, yesterday morning.
Jack Lopresti, (pictured, left) a Tory MP from Filton and Bradley Stoke and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Gibraltar, brought forward the debate.
He said: “We recognise the uneasiness, the nervousness and the fear that a large number of people in Gibraltar are feeling and experiencing at the moment.
“These feelings are due to the historic, very difficult relationship with Spain.
“The fact is that Gibraltar is the only British Overseas Territory with a land border with an EU country, and with Spanish politicians’ continued use of Gibraltar, they have a right to feel nervous.”
Mr Lopresti's representation of Gibraltar was well-received by other MPs in attendance and it was reiterated that Gibraltar is British and the people of the Rock are British. He added that Gibraltar has a powerful voice in the House of Commons via Gibraltar’s friends and colleagues from the All Party Parliamentary Group for Gibraltar.
Robert Neill, Conservative MP for Bromley and Chistlehurst and Secretary for the All Party Parliamentary Group for Gibraltar, said it bodes well for Gibraltar that the newly appointed Prime Minister Theresa May met with the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia before visiting Buckingham Palace.
