Sep 19 - GSD Highlights “Increasing Number Of Complaints” From Laguna Estate Residents

The Opposition says it keeps on receiving numerous concerns from tenants residing at Laguna Estate regarding the “lack of satisfactory progress” in the refurbishment works started over four years ago. The Opposition Spokesman for Housing, Edwin Reyes, says he feels it is his duty to make public examples of the concerns raised by tenants and wished to quote one constituent in particular who said:

“The Laguna Estate is in a state of total neglect. Up to the middle of December 2015 (coinciding with the last General Elections) the refurbishment of the estate had been proceeding at a consistent pace, but as from that date everything has gone into a standstill. If visitors look towards the Estate from Winston Churchill Avenue no one would realize the lack of progress, but all is not just what the eye can see. What little work has been done is to the roof of one block and nothing or little else has progressed. The great majority of the blocks behind those facing Winston Churchill Avenue have not as yet been touched, this can be confirmed when you drive along Devil’s Tower Road as none of the blocks with their facade onto this road have seen the slightest attempt at refurbishing.”

The GSD says that tenants have further expressed grave concerns at the increased infestation of cockroaches within the estate, more so as this summer has seen very high temperatures and there is no sign of this infestation receding. The party says that residents are “totally fed up” with having to close all windows at night as otherwise their homes simply end up invaded with cockroaches.

The Opposition adds that another concern is that the road needs resurfacing as this is “very uneven and dangerous to walk through, particularly for the elderly, as the area lacks adequate lighting.”

One Senior Citizen who has lived at Laguna Estate for many years said: “It is very despairing to have to live my last years under this shameful neglect on the part of the Government and to make matters worse there is no information whatsoever as why this complete stop to the refurbishment of at least a dozen blocks remain undone”.

The Opposition calls upon Government to issue a public commitment as to when the refurbishments will be completed, alongside explanations as to why there has been “so little progress” made over this last year.
