Oct 04 - Spanish Ambassador: Joint Sovereignty Guarantees Continued EU Membership For Gibraltar

The Spanish Ambassador to the United Nations today presented a fully-fledged joint sovereignty “solution” which would guarantee Gibraltar’s continued membership of the EU despite the Brexit result in June’s referendum. The comments were made at the start of this afternoon's session of the UN's Fourth Committee before Fabian Picardo's annual speech. 

In a departure from addresses in recent years, which have seen speeches focus on accusations of tobacco smuggling and disputes over the Rock’s territorial waters and allegedly “opaque” fiscal regime, Román Oyarzun Marchesi gave a detailed description of a deal which could allow Gibraltarians to remain British or adopt dual nationality.

Mr Oyarzun said that the Rock could keep its current economic model as long as it remained in keeping with EU regulations and that local customs and culture would be preserved. He added that the border [“la verja”/ the fence] would be removed ensure the free movement of people.
