Nov 01 - No Trick Or Treat Will Make Gibraltar Give Up Sovereignty – Picardo At Gherkin Reception

YGTV in London

Speaking at some 180 meters above the bustling City at the top floor of the Gherkin yesterday evening, the Chief Minister struck a Halloween note by telling the Gibraltar Day reception that “neither by trick or treat” will the Rock give up its “enduring relationship” with the UK or British sovereignty.

He started by reading out a message sent by the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson - who was unable to attend - in which Mr Johnson expressed the UK government’s “resolute support” for Gibraltar and its people.

“We will continue to work together to deepen our economic ties and shared prosperity,” Mr Johnson concluded.

Mr Picardo then spoke of the Government’s efforts to meet with all officials and Ministers involved in the Brexit process.

He explained that an objective analysis of Gibraltar’s economy had revealed that access to the UK market was “much more important” than any other market.

The Chief Minister added that the new Gibraltar Day format sent the message that Gibraltar was evolving and that, although very proud of its military history, it was now also a “modern place of business” and home to an online gaming sector which was “undoubtedly the most prestigious on the planet.”

The final event of the programme takes place this morning with a trust funds management working breakfast.
