Jan 17 - May’s Brexit Speech - Plenty Of Opportunities For Gibraltar
Hot on the heels of Theresa May’s important Brexit speech earlier today, YGTV spoke to Mike Nicholls, Managing Director of Chesterton’s, for a reaction.
“The Brexit final negotiation reached will be presented to the House of Commons for a vote. I suspect that will frustrate matters albeit not the final decision to leave. Every other statement was broadly in line with May’s ‘Brexit means Brexit’ stance,” he said.
Mr Nicholls added that although Gibraltar was not mentioned, Ms May spoke about the Northern Ireland / Republic of Ireland border issue which has some parallels with the Gibraltar / Spain border.
“Her stance is to find a solution to enable a free flowing border between the UK and a neighbouring EU country. Gibraltar is the only other land frontier that Britain has with the EU. She also mentioned that EU nationals were welcome in the UK and vice versa, again, a position which Gibraltar will want,” he said.
Mr Nicholls ended on a positive note: “It was a robust positioning of the UK strategy and, as long as Gibraltar has a common market with the UK as we expect, and Gibraltar is included in the free trade agreements that the UK negotiates, then I remain of the opinion that there are opportunities ahead for Gibraltar. This is what we have experienced in the property market since the referendum and into 2017.”
