Feb 09 - GSD Says Government Must Act On Care Agency “Haemorrhaging Of Sub-Contracted Workers”

The GSD has said that Minister Costa’s “latest attack attempting to divert” the issues raised by Mr Llamas is “evasive and lacks understanding of the facts and public statements made by stakeholders in our community.”

A statement continued: “The GSD has never undermined or disrespected care workers regardless whether they are Care Agency employed or subcontracted, on the contrary, for him to make that false statement is quite frankly perverse.

“From what we are being told by stakeholders and in particular, Unite the Union’s Press Release last month, the Care Agency service is haemorrhaging good sub-contracted workers due to the unattractive, unsustainable working terms and conditions on which sub-contracted worker are placed.

“On the other hand, we also understand the low morale and concern of Care Agency staff some of which arise from the 45% dependency the Care Agency has on sub- contracted labour. We therefore offer our support and congratulate all staff, employed and subcontracted for striving to provide a positive service to service users, which could only improve for the better with sustainable long-term policies!

“Government really must bite the bullet and develop a Care Quality Commission as exists in the UK who can independently assess the quality of care received by service users across our care services, who are ultimately the most important stakeholders currently paying the price in this debate.”
