Feb 13 - Unite The Union Condemns MOD's Actions Towards Garage Worker

Unite the Union has condemned the MOD over the treatment towards a garage worker who has been working with it for the past 20 years.

A spokesman for the Union said: "Unite the Union is horrified to see how a member of the MT Garage at the Ministry of Defence is being treated. He received a letter on 3rd February stating that due to a language barrier he will no longer be able to carry out his current job, a job which he has done committedly during the past 20 years.

"Important to note that our member, a Moroccan National and a Panel Beater within the MT Garage, is now after so many years asked by the RAF to study English and achieve an NVQ level 3 within a couple of months in order to be able to continue to carry out the trade he has for so long done.

"We shall not comment any further and let the community once again judge the Ministry of Defence in Gibraltar for themselves."

MOD Response

A spokesman for the MOD said: "I am unable to comment on individual cases.

"However, be assured that the MOD are committed to ensuring that our employees have the skills they need.  This is something that we care greatly about and invest in to keep those skills up to date.  It is also important that we maintain a safe working environment for all of our employees and that we comply with relevant standards.  In circumstances where staff become surplus, they are given priority status in pursuing alternative jobs at the same grade."
