Apr 06 - Firefighters Receive Media Training

Firefighters from Gibraltar’s Fire and Rescue Service received media training in Bleak House yesterday morning.

The course, which was delivered by Mark Little will allow firefighters to speak to journalists at the scene of an incident.

They were taught how to use the correct language, body language and techniques in gaining confidence in dealing with press interviews on site at the time of an incident.

Kevang Estella, Sub-Officer Operations, put his training to use when speaking with YGTV.

He said: “Personally I haven’t had much experience in dealing with the media in the past, but hopefully this will give me the right skills to speak to journalists, to help me conquer my nerves, give a good interview and learn how to answer difficult questions.

“When attending an incident, my responsibility will be to answer questions from the media. The information we’ll be giving is information on the fire, the conditions and what we’ve done.

“The first investigation is carried out by the fire and safety team and then they’ll give a briefing or statement later on.”
