May 04 - Cross Frontier Group Welcomes New Members

The Cross Frontier Group (CFG) has expanded its representation of Spanish businesses. At its monthly meeting, held yesterday in La Linea, the Chamber of Commerce of the Campo de Gibraltar and the Confederation of Businessmen in Cadiz (CEC) joined the body.

At the meeting the CFG members agreed unanimously to modify the articles of incorporation so as to incorporate these new members.

The Cross Frontier Group says it appreciated the positive meeting held with officials from the local governments in the Campo region, who were presented with the statement that sets out the CFG’s position in relation to Brexit adding that this message was “very well received” by the institutional leaders of the region.

A statement continued: “In this regard, the CFG agreed to hold similar meetings with parliamentary groups in Madrid, London and Brussels in order to convey the very real concerns of the communities on both sides of the frontier as the Brexit negotiating process gets under way.

“The Cross Frontier Group also agreed to sign a memorandum with the Government of Gibraltar to establish a framework for cooperation with Gibraltar. It is expected that this will be signed in the near future. Running in parallel with this, the CFG will explore the possibility of creating a similar framework of relations with the local governments in the municipalities of the Campo de Gibraltar.

“The CFG has agreed to transfer the application process to become an Economic Group of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) to the Spanish and Gibraltarian authorities. The proposal is that this status should be developed through the chambers of commerce of the region and Gibraltar.

Finally, the trade union members of the CFG reported on the work they have been doing to set up an Interregional Trade Union Committee within the framework of the European Trade Union Confederation. It is hoped that this committee can work on the fringes of the Cross Frontier Group and on a strictly trade-union level, but that it will be an important instrument in fostering further cooperation.”
