Oct 02 – Boris Johnson: Double-Lock “Remains Absolutely Fixed And Immovable”

The UK’s double-lock guarantee on the sovereignty of Gibraltar “remains absolutely fixed and immovable as the Pillars of Hercules themselves” according to the Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Mr Johnson said this in a speech at the Gibraltar Reception at the Conservative party conference in Manchester.

“That double lock,” he continued, “is there for the people of Gibraltar. There can be no change to the constitution of Gibraltar without the specific agreement of the people of Gibraltar and there can be no negotiation unless and until the people of Gibraltar specifically endorse it.”

Mr Johnson also mentioned the recent logistical and material support given to HMS Ocean ahead of its humanitarian mission to the Caribbean saying that this showed that the partnership between the UK and Gibraltar was “vital”.

He concluded: “We will defend this Rock and the principle of democracy […] this is about the right of people to determine their own future.”
