GSD Questions State Of Historical Military Assets

Following the Government's recent press release on the cataloguing of Second World War military defence structures, the GSD have issued a statement questioning the state in which these military assets.

A statement from the GSD follows below:

What the Minister for Heritage has done by announcing the cataloguing of Second World War  military defence structures is to bring to pictorial light the terrible state of our historical  military assets.

While the survey is a sound move which the GSD supports - it is surprising that this has not  been done before - the photos published in the press brings into sharp focus the obvious state  of abandonment of these defensive works.

Our military assets intrinsically deserve to be preserved out of historical respect for the  contribution that those who constructed and manned them made as part of the crucial role  which Gibraltar played in the war effort. There is of course the potential added contribution  that these assets could make to the tourist product which requires so much investment,  particularly in a post Treaty reality.

Damon Bossino said: “Perhaps the Minister for Heritage should be making a statement  updating the public about another significant piece of Gibraltar’s military heritage, namely the  9.2- inch gun, which continues to lie stranded and open to the elements by Europa Point.

The GSD has raised these issues before but it seems that the Government, despite all the spin,  is intent on leaving these historical and military gems such as the 92-inch gun in a state of  disrepair.”
