June 25 - Picardo To Write To Prime Minister On Jet Ski Incident

A Government spokesperson has said:

The Government notes that David Lidington, the Minister for Europe, has, on the margins of an EU meeting in Luxembourg today, raised the issue of the attack on a Gibraltar Jet Ski on Sunday with his Spanish counterpart, Sr Inigo Mendez de Vigo.

It is appropriate that Mr Lidington has taken this step.

It is also right that the matter has been taken up by the Chargé D’Affaires in Madrid, Daniel Pruce, to reiterate this protest in person to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to request a full explanation.

Nonetheless, the Government considers that the seriousness of this matter is such that the Chief Minister will be writing to the Prime Minister in relation to this matter, given the latter's unequivocal statements during their meeting in Downing Street last week, of staunch support in respect of the inviolability of British Gibraltar Territorial Waters ("BGTW"), which Mr Picardo was able to reflect to all citizens on his return to Gibraltar.

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, said: "This incident, given what has now been established, is so serious that it is right that I should refer it directly to the Prime Minister. I will be doing so, accompanying what I send him with the relevant data for his information."
