Aug 29 Chief Minister's Meeting with Foreign Secretary Rt Hon William Hague MP

Fabian PicardoThe Chief Minister, Hon Fabian Picardo MP, met at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London yesterday morning with the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon William Hague MP.

In a meeting which lasted over an hour the Foreign Secretary and the Chief Minister were able to discuss all issues arising from the unacceptable Spanish action at the Gibraltar frontier, as well as reaffirming the strong bonds between the UK and Gibraltar.

The Chief Minister said: "William Hague has long been a good and close friend of Gibraltar. He reaffirmed the UK government's commitment to Gibraltar and its people during the course of our very positive and collegiate meeting today. It is clear that the UK and Gibraltar Governments remain in lockstep in respect of all the current issues. We confirmed the position we took jointly in April last year to propose "ad hoc" dialogue with Spain, while at the same time remaining strongly committed to the Trilateral Forum. I am delighted that we continue to work in close partnership with the UK government across all policy areas."

After the meeting with the Foreign Secretary, Mr Picardo also met the Europe Minister, Rt Hon David Lidington MP, to discuss in further detail a range of issues of mutual interest and concern.
