A message from the GSD Opposition:
The GSD Opposition wishes the people of Gibraltar a happy National Day.
A party spokesman said that National Day is principally an opportunity to come together as a community with friends and family to celebrate all that is good about our community, what we have achieved as a people and to honour the memory of past generations without whose sacrifices we would not enjoy the very high quality of life we enjoy to-day.
A party spokesman confirmed that the GSD Opposition will be present at the National Day Rally in order to highlight the importance of solidarity amongst all the people of Gibraltar on a day of national celebration at a time when our rights as a people are under particular threat regardless of where we believe political responsibility for the current crisis lies.
We wish to again reiterate that attendance at the rally does not signify an abandonment of the GSD’s long held position that the adoption of the New Constitution by referendum constituted an act of self-determination and that as a consequence of that Constitution, Gibraltar enjoys a maximum level of self-Government short of independence and compatible with continued British sovereignty. That is also the position of the United Kingdom Government as repeated on numerous occasions, including at the United Nations. Again, while we respect that it is the SDGG’s view, as expressed on its banner, that 'Gibraltar wants self determination and decolonisation now!’ it is not the position of the GSD Opposition.
We would therefore have preferred that our National Day celebrations project that constitutional reality and indeed, the normality that it represents, rather than appearing to be a defensive re-vindication of the theory of others, particularly Spain, namely that we are still a colony and that there is a problem that needs solving.
However, whilst making our position patently clear on the substance of these issues it is important particularly, at this difficult time for Gibraltar and when the eyes of the world may be upon us, that the Opposition is present at the National Day rally to show solidarity with all the people of Gibraltar.
